About the Show: American Idol

The Phenomenon Continues

Television’s No. 1 show, American Idol, returns for its seventh season when it premieres in January. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the hit series empowers viewers to discover America’s next solo singing superstar by voting for their favorites to win the coveted American Idol title.

Every year, tens of thousands of hopefuls from across the nation audition for a shot at stardom and a chance to be the next American Idol. The show’s judges - Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson - winnow down the competitors to a select group of semifinalists who sing their hearts out each week for the studio audience and the television viewers. The judges have their say after every performance, but it’s the viewing public that determines who will advance to the next round of the competition and who will go home. Voting via telephone and text messaging begins immediately after each performance show, and the results are announced during the following night’s broadcast.

Themes such as country music, hits of the 21st century and Elvis Presley songs add spice to the performance shows, along with appearances and mentoring by legendary artists like Tony Bennett, Jennifer Lopez, Martina McBride and Bon Jovi. These guest performers not only share their expertise with the contestants, they enable audience members to experience a variety of musical styles.

This week was Bon Jovi week. Rock icon of the 80’s and beyond he got to tutor our american idols this week. Hopefully he made an impression. His songs are rough and cover many octaves. Some of the singers put their own touches while others stuck to the basics of the songs itself and made their voices stronger. I personally do not like Blake Lewis’ beat box remix of one of my favorite songs. Yes, I do love his beat box, yes i do think he’s talented and original. But, however you shouldn’t reshape the songs millions grew up on for the new generation in such a way that makes people cringe. How did he get kudos for this ? Even Bon Jovi said 16 bars of beat boxing was excessive, the beginning was awesome and i was hoping he would stick with just that. He brought a drummer on stage and added his beat box and it went on too long for me to remain comfortable.

Phil Stacey started the show off stronger then ever with ‘blaze of glory’. His voice being a powerhouse. But, he did not detour from the notes he has been singing for 15 years. He knew the song in its original state too well. He added no personal touches to the song except made the notes a few bars higher.

Jordin Sparks - This week her hair was rockin! She said her mom pushed her onto bon jovi music, she’s only 17 years old and even bon jovi stated “i couldn’t sing half that good when i was 17.” She sang ‘living on a prayer’ and it was a little rough in spots not the best performance for her but she was a little out of her element and still a little out of her comfort zone, she should of sang a love song where her notes would have made their way accross better, Overall, she’s a great singer and my number two pick for american idol.

Lakisha One of my favorites, and my top pick for american idol. She sings her heart out every song. She reminds me of mandisa not because she’s a big girl. It is because She’s a powerhouse, not self conscious, beautiful and comfortable in her own skin. She’s someone everyone would be able to relate to and she’s my top pick for american idol. I love her voice and her style of singing as well as stage presence.

Chris Richardson the proclaimed Justin Timberlake like singer. I wonder how Justin would of done this song. He would have remembered the words. This song by him was forgettable. his notes were rough and twangy, he should of chosen a different song and played it straight for one song at least.

Melinda doolitle have a nice day from the newer bon jovi album. sounding like Bon Jovi channeling Tina Turner (hey i was typing this during her song, the judges agree with me on this one!). She was awesome as ever, will she ever be comfortable being in center stage permanently ? I think she’s finally getting used to the idea. She is down to earth, her friends tell her how to dress. She’s basic and uncomplicated. If she wins will all the fame and attention break or drive her ? She’s one of my top choices but i don’t think she’s american idol worthy.

Sundance HeadExhibit A: Sundance Head’s performance of Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” on last night’s American Idol. First of all, what about that song spoke so strongly to Head (I’d giggle at this, but the thought of Sir Shovel Beard makes me want to retch.) that he had to present America with such an interpretation? It only brought back memories of seeing the video on MTV, 24/7, not to mention hearing it on the radio every twenty minutes or so. Second of all, there are so many other songs on that album that could potentially show off someone’s vocal range in a positive way and don’t have to be edited for the usually TV-G/TV-PG show’s timeslot. It’s the weakest song on the album and I’m sure many people are like me and when they find themselves feeling nostalgic, they click that button as quickly as possible. Still, why not a little Soundgarden? I’d like to see someone take on “Birth Ritual,” Mudhoney’s “Touch Me I’m Sick” or perhaps even a little of Nirvana’s “Lithium” as a big middle-finger to THE MAN!!

Maybe it was a personal testament to his days on the playground seeing that there’s something about Sundance Head that absolutely screeches “I was bullied so hard as a child I had to make a weapon out of my facial hair to keep them away from me.” Maybe it was an awkward effort to establish cred with the rock crowd much like the frontage from Constantine’s constant eye-f***s to show he was the next Jim Morrison or Bo Bice’s swinging around of his long mane like a long-lost Doobie Brother. Either way, I had to busy myself with preparations for dinner, changing the cat litter, scrubbing the stove, really ANYTHING to distract myself from the abomination growling from my television set. Plus, the “white man’s overbite” expressions the backing band was making to show just.how.hard.they.were.ROCKING. were worthy of a Christopher Guest behind-the-scenes-improv-movie-skewering. That only makes the judges’ generally positive reaction to it all the more baffling.

There was only one highlight of the evening and that came after Brandon Roger’s rendition of Rare Earth’s “I Just Wanna Celebrate.” The judges weren’t too impressed, which was strange, but after the heap of mediocre mewling splayed out before them, they were probably just cranky. Buuuuut, when Ryan Seacrest leaned in to ask Brandon Rogers during his post-interview, “How badly do you want it? You’d do anything right?” I was yelping out in response, “Like a blowjob? You know, a blowjob? Because that sometimes helps you get your foot in the door. Or so I’ve heard.”

Seeing as that’s how Seacrest got to be so prominent in Hollywood these days. By giving someone high on the television food chain a blow job. Someone that helped groom him on the casting couch for his mani-pedi self to be all over our television screen. Let’s say his name rhymes with Schmirv Miffin. There’s high comedy on purpose. That’s beauty in and of itself. Then there’s accidental high comedy, slight faux pas of sorts made by those who have no idea what they’re saying, but it still comes off as genius. And I was witness to that, last night. How generous of them considering the ear rape I’ve been subjected to on the guy’s night week after week. Or maybe I just have an overactive imagination and Ryan was innocently propositioning Brandon in a way that felt *slightly* familiar to him…

Parents, if your kids look like a Gremlin and sings like a wookie maybe you should be honest with them before they show up on American Idol. This season’s good singers are far and few in between. We have seen undiscovered talent that has "trained" for American Idol from thier own personal boot camp and she could belt it out!We have a very hot adopted guy who is very easy on the eyes watch for him to make it through hollywood if he does hell be one of my top picks.

The bad and the ugly bring on Hollywood. After a few warm up episodes the judges seem to be weary of the bad singers already and are willing to move to Hollywood as soon as they can. Typical singers who have good vocals that need some work are not being allowed to hollywood this year like former years. Even last year had its sector of raw not necessarily honed talent. One guy self proclaimed to be a cross between jesus and osama sounds good as hell would love to see him with a make over or soon or he will be going the road of Elliott Yamin from last year who just spent 5000 on getting his grill fixed with porcelain caps after idol. He was a good singer and ok on the eyes and had a good voice but his teeth needed some work.
