I am sad to say that Donna Summer passed away at age 63 today on May 17, 2012 in Florida from a year long battle with lung cancer. I was driving while I heard this information on the radio and instantly called my mom. Donna Summer’s music was something I grew up to, not because I was born in her time but because my mother would jam out to her record while she was cleaning. I remember thinking that my mom was crazy because she would sing and enjoy herself during these tasks and found myself fascinated by the beats and Donna’s voice. Soon I became a fan as well. Donna Summer came to fame in 1975 after making a demo of the song “Love To Love You” for another singer but her producers wanted her to sing it and it became a hit. In 1977 she wrote the song “Last Dance” for the soundtrack for Thank God It’s Friday and won an academy award. She carried on to number one with the hits “MacArthur’s Park”, “Bad Girls”, and “Hot Stuff” and won 5 Grammys. In 2008 after a 14 year hiatus she relaesed an album titled “Crayons”. With that album came a tour and I was fortunate to see her with my mother at The Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. That lady was still amazing and giving it her all and I could not believe that she was 59. Donna Summer, this man loves you and will miss your energy, rest in peace!

Here is “On The Radio” another amazing hit from an amazing woman.

There is a reason The Avengers made $200.5 million this weekend because it was the shit!!!! I watched Iron Man and admit it was a good movie but it made me fall asleep on 3 different occasions during it. For that reason and the horrible X-men movies I was hesitant on watching The Avengers. Marvel and Disney Studios made me come back to the light that is the super hero movie. The Avengers had great characters that felt like they were straight out of the comic book, amazing dialogue, comedy and action. After watching The Avengers I fell in love with Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth leading me to pick up Captain America The First Avenger on DVD and soon Thor as well. The delivery of Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner as Black Widow and Hawkeye were flawless. The one character I was really doubting was Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk but he made the man and monster believable. The connection between Mark and Robert Downey Jr. was remarkable giving me a new love of Iron Man. I definitely recommend watching this movie and if you stay past the credits for an added bit of humor you will not be disappointed. I look forward to a second movie. Avengers Assemble!!!!

Logo’s season 4 of <a href="http://www.popassault.com/celebrities/music/rupaul/"target="_self"title="RuPaul" >RuPaul‘s Drag Race came to it’s finale last week but did not give us a winner. WTF!?! Ru needed more time to think about it and in a first time ever had viewer participation in crowning the next Drag Superstar between the final three, Chad Michaels, Sharon Needles, and Phi Phi O’Hara. So in actuality The Reunion which aired April 30, 2012 was the grand finale. I was not impressed by this decision. First I was waiting to see what rule was broken that caused the removal of Willam. I was thinking it was going to be juicey after she puked during the show and the talk of the ladies that she had some drug use, only to come to find out that it was because she was meeting up with her husband during production. After 39 minutes of being reacquainted with the contestants we finally get to the winner. Miss Sharon Needles the Goth Princess became RuPaul’s Next Drag Queen Superstar. The way I bring it to you is the way I felt the show did. After a bunch of fun it came down to a big wind bag waste of time. Ru, love you to death but I think you f’ed it up this time, not your contestants. Next season I hope for a better ending.

So as they say for every birth there is a death and we are sad to say goodbye to Adam Yauch AKA MCA of The Beastie Boys. On May 04, 2012 Adam succumbed to cancer at the age of 47 after announcing his condition in 2009. The Beastie Boys took hip hop and punk and gave us Fight For Your Right To Party in the 80′s and continued to make outstanding music up until their recent induction into <a href="http://www.popassault.com/celebrities/the-rock-celebrities/"target="_self"title="The Rock" >The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Adam also was an organizer of the Tibetan Freedom Concerts after practicing Buddism and directed a documentary about basketball called Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot in 2008. Adam leaves behind wife Dechen Wangdu and daughter Tenzin Losel. Your fans are missing you already! Here is Paul Revere another early fan favorite of The Beastie Boys.

Last night was the Choke episode of <a href="http://www.popassault.com/television/glee/"target="_self"title="Glee" >Glee because during Racheal’s audition for college she forgets the lines to her favorite song Rain On My Parade and Puck fails a geography test he needs in order to graduate. That being said the second storyline was Coach Beast coming to school with a black eye and the girls making comments about her getting beat by her husband Cooter. Nene Leakes as Roz Washington over hears and is disturbed that the girls would think domestic violence is a laughing matter and confronts them about with fellow coaches Beast and Sue. Beast lies about being hit by a speed punching bag but eventually the truth comes out that she did get hit by her husband. What I loved was the further developement of Nene as Roz. Her character came out of nowhere this year and I think was brought on to antagonize Sue, which was funny on it’s own. Now she is getting more lines and turning into one of my favorite characters through humor that is priceless. I am a big fan of The Real Housewives of Atlanta just for Nene and if the series of Glee keeps her on I will continue to watch her as Roz. Another funny lady that actually had a bit of a serious role was Whoopi Goldberg. If you haven’t watched it yet catch it OnDemand if you have Comcast.

May 1, 2012 welcomed the birth of one of pop culture’s “Biggest” pregnancies since Beyonce, Jessica Simpson had little Maxwell Drew Johnson. After months of ridicule for being so big during her last months of pregnancy we finally understand what caused this for Jessica, her baby weighed in at 9 pounds and 13 ounces and 22 1/2 inches. I wish her all the luck and congratulations! Now I know what most of you are thinking because I was thinking the same thing, why Maxwell for a girl and what’s up with celebrities naming their children off the wall names? (ie. Apple, Blue, Blanket) This one however makes a little sense because it is the combination of both fiance Eric Johnson’s middle name Maxwell and Jessica’s mother’s maiden name Drew. Jessica much respect for having your bundle of joy but couldn’t you have waited to use that name for a boy in the future. Much blessings and good health to Maxwell in any regards.

Wrath of the Titans is a movie that I could not wait to see when it came out. I loved the remake of Clash of the Titans and was expecting the sequel to be just as awesome. (It wasn’t) Don’t get me wrong, the movie was good, but it just wasn’t really worth going out for in my opinion. With Clash of the Titans, they already had a good movie that they were able to improve on and add 3D effects to in order to give it that extra umpf. Wrath…eh. The effects were good, the action: plentiful, the story: lacking. As is the issue with all sequels you try to give the protagonist a reason to be back on the screen, but sometimes that reason is very weak and if you don’t start off strong, there is no where to go but down. Perseus (son of Zeus) now has a 10 year old son (Helius) , Io (his wife) is dead and Kronos is trying to escape the prison that his children (the gods) have put him in. Now this may just be my opinion, but usually when a sequel starts off with one part of the couple dead or they are splitting up, that usually signals a bad movie is to come. By ripping the happy couple from the first movie apart, you are creating a false emptiness/void that acts as a crutch for why the main character does or does not do something until the zero hour. We already know that Perseus is torn between his demi-god status in the world and does what he can to prove that he is more human than god. Now that was all well and good in the first movie, but clearly after slaying the Kraken, you would expect him to embrace the other half of his existence instead of hide from it. Sure, he puts his sword down when he has a kid, but that doesn’t mean he no longer serves a purpose. With that being said, this is why the movie falls flat: He pretends to be a humble fisherman and will not assist Zeus until it is too late and then tries to rectify <a href="http://www.popassault.com/television/jersey-shore/"target="_self"title="The Situation" >the situation. Then they decide to add in that Perseus and Andromeda have some sort of love for each other that is not present throughout the movie until the end. When it is displayed, it feels cheap and as if it were an afterthought of the writer who said ” Oh yeah, he’s single now! He can totally make out with Andromeda and they can end up together like they did in the very first Clash of the Titans” (cue my face with the “huh???” look on it) I think had they stuck to the main parts of story: Kronos wanting to get free, Perseus saving the day, gods wasting away, it would’ve been fine. Throwing in the last minute love aspect and Perseus’ “no I don’t want to be a demi-god” attitude and I was just overall bored with the story and was fairly unaffected by the action scenes due to the unfolding story that didn’t capture my attention. I wouldn’t say it was a total bust, but had I known, I would’ve just waited for it to come out on DVD.

Yesterday I went to see American Reunion just to catch up with the characters from the first movie. I was expecting a bunch of laughter and was let down. For all the great reviews that this movie got, to me it was a weak version of the original. Now don’t get me wrong, it was great to see what had become of all the characters but the theme of the movie being, things are not the same as they were in high school pretty much should have been a thought in making this movie. Just wait for DVD is my opinion. That’s all I have to say. :/

This morning April 18, 2012 a pop culture icon has passed away, the man I talk about is Dick Clark. After a severe heart attack in Los Angeles Dick died at the age of 82. Let’s just face it, without Dick we would not have amazing New Year’s Eves. He also brought us great times on American Bandstand and The Pyramid game shows, as well as other television shows. He will be greatly missed and should know that no one will ever take his place.
