Project Runway Allstars – Down to the Wire
I have been a fan of Project Runway since season 2 and have also enjoyed their All Star competitions as well. For this year’s All Star panel, we actually see a few new faces. Some are a breathe of fresh air to the panel that we all know and love, others, I could simply do without. While I adore Georgina Chapman on the panel, I am not too pleased with Isaac Mizrahi being one of the judges. He leaves much to be desired when compared with the one and only Michael Kors. Of course I don’t mean to compare, but when you notice yourself nit-picking, you realize that maybe they fell a little short with casting the right male designer. As for the new host, she is ok, but I find myself missing Heidi’s quirky comments, or maybe just her accent. (maybe a little of both) And of course we cannot leave out Ms. Joanna Coles. I have been a fan of hers since she was a guest judge on Project Runway and enjoy her in Tim Gunn’s usual position of “Mentor”. I think that she is great at helping the designers find their way and also very good at simmering down tension between designers (Jerell & Michael C) when their looks start to mirror each other. As for the All Star designers, I was very happy with many of the selections. Some of my personal favorites came back such as Anthony Williams, Michael Costello, Mondo Guerra, Sweet P and April Johnson. And some of my not so personal favorites such as Rami Kashou. Not too thrilled with Rami in his own season and still held that dislike for him in All Stars, and was quite satisfied when he finally went home. This season also made me appreciate some designers that I had no feelings toward one way or another like Austin Scarlet and Mila Hermanovski. I was not a fan of Mila’s on her own season because I believed her to be snotty and very judgmental and did not really care for the way she designed since she always leaned toward color blocking as her main talent. I am not sure what happened between then and now, maybe Mila became more humble, or maybe I was able to look past her attitude and see what a fabulous designer she really is. I actually enjoyed many of Mila’s outfits this season and was sad when they sent her home. I really admired her work ethic and her talent and if they ever wanted to add her to another All Stars cast, I would not object. Tonight’s episode leaves us with just 5 designers remaining and I am hoping that Jerell or Kenley bite the dust first (no offense Kenley, but as your season went on, you became more and more annoying and you only ever make the same outfit but in different fabric) With Michael, Mondo and Austin left in the running, it will be harder for me to be happy at who goes home and who stays. The only problem I find with Rami leaving is I no longer root for anyone to go home because I really enjoy them all. But all is not lost, as the tag line goes: “One day you’re in and the next day you’re out”. Once this slice of Project Runway is over, the next season will begin with fresh faces and hopefully with Michael Kors and Heidi Klum in their rightful places.
